Happy Summer!Monday marked the first day of Summer. My favorite time of the year! Just thinking about it makes me happy. Lots of sun, warm weather, beach days, the smell of suncreen, watermelon, BBQ's, fresh fruit, family & friend get-togethers, travel, birthday, red white and blue, ice cream, peaches, cherries... I could go on and on... This week I also found a great recipe for summer, Fresh Strawberry Pie. It was easy to make and very yummy too!

Fairy Blossom Lavender Lane?
Every year right around this time the jacaranda trees begin to bloom. I love the burst of color on the trees in the midst of the June gloom! These tall trees form a canopy of lovely purple blooms and the ground is covered with a delicate carpet of fallen flowers... it kind of reminds me of the part in the movie Anne of Green Gables when she is driving along in a carriage and gives creative, descriptive and very imaginative names to all the places. I wonder what Anne would call this street? I should read this book again! Here are a few of her imaginative names:
"I have it lots of time--whenever I see anything royally beautiful. But they shouldn't call that lovely place the Avenue. There is no meaning in a name like that. They should call it--let me see--the White Way of Delight. Isn't that a nice imaginative name?"
"That's Barry's pond," said Matthew.
"Oh, I don't like that name, either. I shall call it--let me see--the Lake of Shining Waters. Yes, that is the right name for it. I know because of the thrill. When I hit on a name that suits exactly it gives me a thrill. Do things ever give you a thrill?"

11th Amica Downtown Anaheim 5K That is the race I decided to run in on the spur of the moment last night! My neighbor Bill mentioned he and his daughter were going to be participating and asked if I'd like to run too. Well, sure why not! Although I haven't been running for over a year! So we got up before the sun and drove to downtown Anaheim. The race started promptly at 8 AM and I think there were close to 2000 participants. I wasn't sure I'd run the whole way but I paced my self at a nice and easy jog and made it all the way in about 37 minutes. It's always pretty exhilarating to cross a finish line with everyone cheering!

Summer & work...
June gloom is in full bloom. This whole week has been gloomy, cloudy and cold. Where did my warm summer sun go? Please come back soon! Other things that arrive with June besides gloomy weather are short Fridays at Biola. We get to work half a day and wear jeans if we want to. Yay! This morning we had our annual staff training day. The theme of the morning was earthquake preparedness. John and Carissa did a great job with the presentation. But I think the highlight of the morning was the presentation of the President Awards. Congratulations to Megan from our office on winning one of the awards!

Voting Day
"Let each citizen remember at the moment he is offering his vote that he is not making a present or a compliment to please an individual - or at least that he ought not so to do; but that he is executing one of the most solemn trusts in human society for which he is accountable to God and his country."
[Samuel Adams, The Writings of Samuel Adams, Harry Alonzo Cushing, editor (New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1907), Vol. IV, p. 256, in the Boston Gazette on April 16, 1781.]

Baby Kate Comes for Dinner
June is here and it is definitely beginning to feel like summer! With summer school in session things have slowed down just a bit at work... and tomorrow is our first short Friday! This afternoon Abby, Michael and baby Kate came over for dinner. While we waited for dinner to cook we walked around the yard and picked strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, lemons and avocados. Kate really enjoyed playing in the yard but got a little exasperated at the gnats! So we headed inside and enjoyed baked BBQ chicken, baked sweet potato fries, corn on the cob, and a big salad. Yum!It is so fun to see how big and talkative Kate is... and she loves Auntie Ruth's shoes! I am so thankful to the Lord for great friends and a wonderful place to live.
