Four Days of Jury Duty
Sunday evening I dialed the number on my jury summons hoping and praying that I would just need to call in the following days. No such luck. "Please report to the Compton Courthouse at 7:45 am." I was not really happy about this since this was the week our Banner consultant was coming... well, what do you do, right? I left the house at 6:30 AM Monday morning with the Google directions in hand (since I have never been anywhere close to Compton before and didn't want to get lost). It took me an hour to get there since traffic on the 91 was pretty bad. Once I got there I went up to the 2nd floor to report for duty. I would guess that there were a couple hundred people in the jury waiting room. After an entertaining orientation we sat and waited... and waited... finally right before lunch I was called and told to report to the 4th floor right after lunch. I ate lunch in the cafeteria with Gloria, a friendly, talkative, Mexican lady who works for Kaiser. After lunch our group reported to Department 3 in the 4th floor and so the loooooooooong jury selection process began. This took place until 4:30 PM and they still weren't done. On Tuesday the jury selection process continued and finally at the end of the day we had 12 jurors and 1 alternate. Since there was no time to begin opening arguments the Commissioner asked us to return on Wednesday at 1:30 PM. Wednesday, after a bit of a delay, we started by listening to the opening arguments by the prosecution and defense and then they called the first witness. That took the rest of the time until 4:15 PM. Once again we were told to report back at 1:30 PM on Thursday to continue hearing the witness testimonies. I worked in the morning and then drove again over to the courthouse looking forward to another day. We all filed in and took our seats then the Commissioner announced that the principle witness was not able to appear and so the trial couldn't continue and was thrown out. "Thanks for doing your duty. You are dismissed!" This was a bit disappointing because I was actually looking forward to this whole experience. But I guess it was the defendant's lucky day. All in all it was a different and interesting experience and I met some really nice and friendly people like Jennie, Barbara and Eileen (the lady in waiting!).

Music to soothe the soul...After a grueling, stressful and horrible work week there's nothing like a little music to soothe the soul. Last night I attended a concert performance of the US Army Training & Doctrine Command Band. Their Brass Quintet performed selections from Bach and Mozart to Ellington and Gershwin. They were very good and looked great in their uniforms!

On Thursday afternoon Monica, her Mom and the kids arrived for the weekend. I hurried home from work and was greeted with big hugs, kisses and freshly picked flowers (by Margie) on my bed. Friday morning Aunt Sara took them to Disneyland to begin celebrating Abby's 13th birthday. Timothy & Mom arrived later that afternoon and we all got together for a wonderful birthday dinner. Abby picked out everything on the menu and we had a great time eating, opening gifts, and just enjoying being together. Saturday morning Sara, Mom & Margarita took off for a day of sightseeing in Hollywood. Tim & Monica spent a "kid free" Valentine's day and Grace, Jon and I took the kids down to Dana Point. After grabbing a quick bite at In-n-Out we arrived at the Ocean Institute. The kids got to see all kinds of fish, jelly fish and sting rays. Margie and Aunt Grace got to pet the star fish. After finding all the things on the scavenger hunt list we were off to see Heather. Her dad is one of the caretakers of the mast ships Pioneer and Spirit of Dana Point. These are replicas of old pirate schooners. It was fun to explore the deck and then go below and see all the little nooks and crannys. The kids loved it. After that we met up with Tim & Monica at the circle in old town Orange where we ate dinner at Felix's Cuban restaurant... mmmm yummy! Sunday I was up bright and early with Christine to set up the hospitality refreshments at church. We went to the third service and the nine of us filled up a whole row =) After the service we stayed for a lunch and special speaker Kelly Green who is a missionary in Colombia. It was encouraging and uplifting to hear what the Lord is doing. Family weekends are always fun but sad when they have to end. The rainy gloomy Monday matched my mood. Grace Group in Three DThis afternoon was spent visiting with friends and watching some of the big game. K & K brought three-D glasses for everyone to see some of the half time commercials. It ended up being a very exciting final five minutes of the game. I was the only one rooting for the Steelers in a room full of Cardinal fans... yay Steelers! After the game I had to call Emily & Gino to congratulate them on the win =)
